Streptomycetes can grow through small filter capillaries.
Streptomycetes are Gram-positive bacteria growing as branching filaments. The filaments are able to deform. This ability allows the cells to squeeze through capillaries as small as 0.2 micron in diameter. After passage through the capillaries, numerous hyphae are morphologically altered to a helical structure.
متن کاملOxygen delivery through capillaries.
During physical exertion the consumption rate increases and some cells suffer from the lack of oxygen. The time-wise evolution of hypoxia is analyzed mathematically under the condition the perfusion of each capillary is constant. The domain used contains multiple non-homogeneous capillaries of different solute out. Cells surrounding capillaries may consume or preserve more oxygen than are neces...
متن کاملCan absence make a team grow stronger?
Some projects have such diverse requirements that they need a variety of specialists to work on them. But often the best-qualified specialists are scattered around the globe, perhaps at several companies. Remarkably, an extensive benchmarking study reveals, it isn't necessary to bring team members together to get their best work. In fact, they can be even more productive if they stay separated ...
متن کاملHow big can a black hole grow?
I show that there is a physical limit to the mass of a black hole, above which it cannot grow through luminous accretion of gas, and so cannot appear as a quasar or active galactic nucleus (AGN). The limit is Mmax 5× 1010 M for typical parameters, but can reach Mmax 2.7× 1011 M in extreme cases (e.g. maximal prograde spin). The largest black hole masses so far found are close to but below the l...
متن کاملCan International Patent Protection Help a Developing Country Grow?
International patent protection was a key issue at the multilateral trade talks sponsored by the World Trade Organization in Cancun in September 2003. Indeed, since the organization was founded almost ten years ago, the international protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) has been a bone of contention between developing and industrialized countries. At that time, developing countries d...
